![]() ChoralSounds Northwest 2009-10 Concert SeasonRed, White & Musicalswith special guest Dave Ross Saturday, May 15, 2010 · 8pm Highline Performing Arts Center, Burien Conducted by David Spring KIRO radio host and erstwhile political candidate Dave Ross joins ChoralSounds Northwest for a reflection on the impact of political discourse in both British and American musical theater through the years. Beginning with Gilbert & Sullivan, whose comic operas H.M.S. Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance, and The Mikado, among others, were among the first to incorporate the political controversies of their day into their book and music, politics and musical theater have often walked hand-in-hand. In Red, White & Musicals, we take a enlightening and entertaining journey from the late 1800’s reign of Gilbert & Sullivan in the British theater to America’s own contributions to the genre, including such legendary shows as Show Boat, Of Thee I Sing, South Pacific, Carousel and My Fair Lady. Well-known to Northwest audiences for his love for Gilbert & Sullivan, Dave Ross will be featured in songs from their repertoire, and will offer his own cleverly updated lyrics for several numbers. Colorful costuming and delightful staging complement this salute to some of the most relevant shows in the history of the musical theater on both sides of the pond.
